A group of seven alleged individuals of German far-left organization stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
