New York Introduces Portal for Citizens to Report ICE Videos Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens

The state AG has launched a fresh digital platform encouraging citizens to share images and footage of federal immigration enforcement around the state. This move follows a shortly after a high-profile ICE raid disrupted Manhattan's Chinatown, prompting large-scale demonstrations.

American Citizens Detained During ICE Operation

A congressional representative revealed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were taken into custody and held for "about 24 hours" after the previous day's operation. Protests broke out in the city on consecutive evenings.

"All New York residents is entitled to live without fear," the AG wrote in a release.

"If you witnessed and recorded immigration enforcement yesterday, I encourage you to share that footage with the authorities. We are dedicated to reviewing these reports and investigating any wrongdoings."

Portal Features

The platform includes fields to send visual evidence of the raid, along with a field to note location information. Before submitting, submitters must check a box that states that "authorities could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, including in a lawsuit or public report."

Information about the ICE Action

The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say included more than 50 government officers, happened in a famous neighborhood of Manhattan where imitation purses, items, goods and merchandise are regularly available en masse – often to visitors.

Videos of the operation reveal several hooded and equipped federal agents securing and holding a man, and forcing aside onlookers. Crowds of locals pursued the officers down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was observed rolling through the Manhattan avenues.

Political Response

At a Wednesday press conference featuring the rights organization, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be taken for unjustly." He noted the persons were released on Wednesday with no charges filed.

"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman said. "This represents a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is simply a pretext to incite violence for federal officials to utilize the troops to stop conflict that they themselves caused."

Widespread Condemnation

Outrage over the federal action escalated – every NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the raid, along with NY's governor.

"Repeatedly, the current administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, not safety. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.

New York City advocacy organizations expressed outrage also.

"Immigration agents raided Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, hooded officers and riot gear to go after local sellers attempting to earn income. This action had no connection to public safety and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," remarked the head of a major immigrant coalition.

Official Guidelines

ICE policy bans the holding of citizens and the bureau has claimed it does not apprehend US citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has discovered that over 170 American nationals have been taken illegally by federal agents during the period of the present government.

Current Situation

Immigration operations have been rising in frequency in NY and nationwide recently.

A recent action in central NYC was the initial documented operation on an housing center of the current administration. Rallies targeting immigration enforcement are commonplace along with accusations of aggression and abusive practices.

Most recently, a submission submitted by civil rights groups alleged healthcare failures of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
